IBM has launched a legal challenge in an estimated $800m tax dispute with India’s revenue department, becoming the latest major western multinational to find itself ensnared in a tax wrangle in Asia’s third-largest economy. The US-based technology group has issued an appeal against a recent tax demand to India’s dispute resolution panel, an arbitration body often used by international businesses, according to people familiar with the situation The company’s move follow a series of recent high profile tax rows relating to global companies, including British telecoms group Vodafone and Anglo-Dutch oil group Shell. .
